The ramifications of the Nady deal.
With Xavier Nady and Damaso Marte headed to the New York Yankees, pending physicals of the involved players, what will this move mean to the Yankees?
There's no set-in-stone lineup when it comes to Joe Girardi. He has used so many different lineup's this year you never know what to expect. But in acquiring Nady, it's obvious the lineup will be shaken up. If Girardi goes this route, the potential lineup, written below, could be a nightmare for opposing manager's.
1. Johnny Damon - LH
2. Derek Jeter - RH
3. Bobby Abreu - LH
4. Alex Rodriguez - RH
5. Jason Giambi - LH
6. Xavier Nady - RH
7. Robinson Cano - LH
8. Jose Molina - RH
9. Melky Cabrera - SH
When you look at the game of baseball today, you know how many pitcher-batter matchup's there are. Lefty specialists have one job - get left-handed hitters out. Well, this lineup creates a problem. Oh, you want to bring in your specialist to face Bobby Abreu? Sure, go ahead. You have Rodriguez after that. You'll have to make another pitching change. Then what happens? You have another lefty in Giambi. Oh, not a problem, we have another lefty. Well, there goes that lefty. Bring someone else in to face Nady. Now what? We're out of lefties in the bullpen - there's the problem. This lineup would have four left-handers, four right-handers, and a switch hitter, alternating every player.
Then you look at the bench - Betemit (S), Sexson (R), Gardner (L), Christian (R). By making one trade, the depth of this lineup has increased greatly. The Yankees can match nearly any pitching change.
On top of this, they acquired Damaso Marte. He is not only a lefty specialist. Right-handed hitters are only batting .200 against Marte. The arm angle, the stuff, he's unhittable at times.

I think your analysis said it all. Cashman made a great move with this trade. The guy has a knack for surprising everyone. There has been a lot of trade speculation recently regarding what moves the Yanks would make but did anyone think they were going for nady? i thought they'd make a move for a catcher, even though they have a capable one filling in for jorge [but you know how the yanks are]. all in all though, loving this move. hope it works out well.

Vanessa -- They have actually been rumored in a Nady deal for a while. The asking price from Pittsburgh was just too much for a while. The Yankees were also in the hunt for Marte the whole time. I doubt many expected them to land both players, though. Catching is not a big deal right now. The lineup just got so much deeper with one move that acquiring a catcher won't even be a priority for this team. Girardi doesn't feel they need a catcher. He is pleased with the way Moeller catches Rasner and we're all happy with Jose Molina. His defense makes up for any issues at the plate. Starting pitching may be the next, and last, move, though.

Ahh, I hadn't been following the trade rumors that closely because I just hate the rumors, I stick to the facts but I had heard about them interested washburn and some others.
i heard that cashman isn't likely to make a move for a starter. he said that that problem can be solved with the organization. kennedy almost threw a no hitter the other day in the minors so he may get another shot. i doubt he would make a move for a starter also because starting pitching costs a lot [whether it be giving up major prospects or money]... i don't think cash is looking to deal away the future.

Vanessa -- Kennedy definitely made his case for getting another go-around when he pitched the near no-hitter. Unfortunately for him, the defense messed it up. Ohlendorf was actually close to getting a start as well, but I'm guessing being in Pittsburgh has diminished that idea. They want to get rid of Igawa and a b-level prospect but Seattle wants to deal Vidro along with Washburn so they can get rid of some salary - that's the big problem right now, salary and incentives.

Okay, so my call that LaTroy Hawkins is going to have a very good second half is obviously down the drain... but I did call that Joba would pitch really well and he did, and I did say I thought Nady would be great for the Yankees. Now, all of a sudden, my prediction that the Yankees would reach first at the end of July doesn't seem so unlikely now, does it?
